On the front page of the site you will find a search box which you can use to quickly find the business or organisation you are looking for.

Searching

By Category

It is easy to find the business you want. You can enter the "category" of business you are looking for, for example: taxi, dentist, plumber

The name of the category found does not have to be an exact match for the word you type. For example searching for "plumber" returns businesses in the category "plumbing and heating services".

In the search results page the grey box on the right will tell you what you looked for and what business categories are being shown.

Containing Word

If you know that you are looking for a business whose name or description contains a particular word, then you can type it into the "Containing word" box. For example, searching for "comhairle" will return all the business or organisations containing this word. Typing multiple words will look for businesses which match any of the words provided. For example, searching for "comhairle nan eilean" will look for any businesses with the words "nan" (such as "BBC Radio Nan Gaidheal") or "eilean" (such as "Eilean Fraoich Campsite") as well as businesses containing "comhairle". To search for the exact phrase "comhairle nan eilean", then surround it in quotes.

By location

Type the location of the business you are looking for into this box. For example, searching for "Barra" will return all businesses located in Barra. If the term typed doesn't match one of the main island locations (see browse by location for these) the term will be matched against any part of the address. For example, searching for "Creagorry" will return any businesses where part of their address matches.

Browsing

From the front page of the site, choose the browse tab where you can then choose to browse for businesses, by name, location or category. When browsing by name or category, businesses are grouped under broad geographical location (ordered by postcode) for your convenience.

Browse by name

Use the letter links along the top of the page to view businesses starting with that letter. Note you may get different groupings depending on which language you are viewing the site in. Use the page links along the bottom to see the next page of results.

Browse by location

Use the Island buttons along the top of the page to view businesses from that area. Use the page links along the bottom to see the next page of results.

Browse by category

Pick a category from the full category list to browse businesses in that category. Note that categories may appear more than once with different names to make it easier for you to find what you are looking for. For example, "Dental Services" and "Dentist".
